In-Depth Review
Startex Power began seving customers in early 2005. As a relative late-comer to the deregulated Texas power market, Startex Power has been able to achieve significant success. Based in Houston, Texas, Startex Power's management team comes from a variety of backgrounds. Most notably, Marcie Zlotnik served as President and Director of Gexa Energy, a $100 million retail electric provider she co-founded in 2001.
With such a short history, Startex Power has relied heavily on offering competitive pricing to both commercial and residential customers. Their current strategy seems to be limiting contract terms to under 36 months, which is not uncommon with the volatility we've seen recently in energy markets. A mistake common to many of the recently failed texas electric companies is mismanaging risk. Startex Power appears to be safely managing that risk in many ways. For example, the Startex Power MCPE (Market Clearing Price for Energy) product deviates from the norm by offering a floating "adder" rather than a fixed price adder. To consumers, this could make an already risky product even more risky. However, this is proof positive that Startex Power leaves little to chance when managing risk.
The expected outcome of Startex Power's risk management strategy is long term success as a stable, reputable electric provider with a fair price.
