Reliant Energy is considered to be the second largest Retail Electric Provider in Texas. They serve approximately 1.9 million customers in Texas and own about 15,956 MW of generation capacity across 5 regions of the US. Reliant is the Affiliate Retail Electric Provider (A-REP) in the Houston area. This means that if a customer in the Houston area has not selected a competitive option for their power, they will by default pay Reliant Energy's inflated and regulated "Price to Beat" electric rate. Reliant Energy Business Services focuses on the small to medium commercial customers in Texas. While more competitive than their chief rival, TXU, Reliant Energy seems to rely on their well known brand to some degree rather than focus on driving their prices down to meet some of their rivals in the highly competitive deregulated market in Texas. Despite this, Reliant Energy has been very succesful in winning new business from markets previously not open to competition.

Reliant points to their "Savings, Service and Reliability" as reasons to do business with them. Savings is subjective, and when compared to many competitors, Reliant has some work to do. Reliant Energy has excellent service (customer service), especially compared to much of the competition which lacks the experience and size to adequately handle customer care. Reliability is a bit misleading, in our opinion. In this deregulated market, customers do not have to worry about the reliability of their service when selecting an electric provider. ERCOT, or the "Electric Reliability Council of Texas" takes great care in ensuring customers have safe, secure and reliable delivery of power regardless of who the Retail Electric Provider of record is.

One of Reliant Energy's most common commercial products is a quasi "Price to Beat" which has a lower price but bundles in the TDSP charges which are normally "passed through". The problem with this product is that it makes it very difficult for a customer to have an apples to apples comparison between Reliant's "competitive" rate and the competition's "energy only" rate, which is the most common type of competitive electric rate.
