Gexa Energy began serving Texas commercial and residential customers when deregulation opened up. The founders started Gexa from a shell mining company, presumably to more easily enter the public equity markets. Followed by several years of billing problems some believe was caused by their very rapid growth, especially in their home territory of Houston, Gexa Energy was purchased by Florida Power and Light in late 2005. Immediately after the buyout, Gexa energy announced a "rate increase" to their fixed price customers, which they quickly recinded. Gexa Energy has become one of the most popular competitive residential choices for Texas 20 million citizens.
Customers have reported that Gexa has improved a great deal with billing. According to actual customer complaints, Gexa's standard form commercial contract does leave things to be desired. It has been reported that Gexa's early termination penalty has called for a penalty of three months average bills for each year remaining on the contract. This penalty far outweighs the "fair market difference" that many other competitors charge. This penalty has been reduced according to recent customer comments.
Gexa Energy has grown their commercial business through very aggressive "feet on the street" independent agents, which often times results in misrepresentation if those feet aren't adequately trained. This type of bulk marketing is coupled with pricing that is somewhat competitive, but often falls short of many of their larger competitors.
While Gexa has work to do in customer service, pricing and contract terms, they have managed to become a stable Texas electric company with the financial backing of a publicly traded company. Eisenbach Consulting continues to work with Gexa Energy on behalf of our clients who wish for us to help them negotiate a competitive price with Gexa Energy.
